2 STEPS TO SETTING GOALS – Finding your purpose

STEP ONE

Write down 4 or 5 items in each category that you would like to achieve.

For instance, in physical you may write:  Walk each day before work, or eat healthier, or run a marathon, or meditate..

Learn from the past, set vivid, detailed goals for the future, and live in the only moment of time over which you have any control: now. Denis Waitley

Set your clear definite purpose and model your activities around it.

PHYSICAL HEALTH
FINANCIAL
CAREER – PROFESSION
FAMILY LIFE
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION
SPIRITUAL
FRIENDSHIPS
TRAVEL

OK, get started.  In this order, write the heading then 4 – 5 things you’d like to accomplish… write it as if there are no obstacles.

In other words, don’t think about HOW you will accomplish the items you are writing… you just need to write.  Get them down.

Example:

1. Physical Health

-Jog every morning
-Get a gym membership and hire a personal training and actually go
-lose 20 pounds
-eat better

2. Financial

-Get a better job earning 100K a year
-Find an opportunity that will create cash flow and residual income so that I don’t have to work until the day I die
-Financial Freedom

3. Career – Profession

-Own my own business
-have a work schedule that is around family time
-have more time to spend at the animal shelter or get paid to work there

4. Family Life

-Spend more time with family
-Spend more time with family
-Spend more time with family
-Spend more time with family

-that’s a little joke… my own personal goal! 🙂

5. Personal Development Education

-Attend certification classes to become (fill in the blank)
-Mentor other people or students to be successful
-Learn

6. Spiritual

-Try yoga
-Go to a spiritual retreat and meditate
-attend church

7. Friendships

-spend more time with and helping friends
-find hobbies and friends
-get out and enjoy my life with family and friends by hiking locally

8. Travel

-Plan a trip to Tuscany Italy
-Buy an RV and travel across the USA with my kids
-Go to Disney World this summer

STEP TWO: FINDING YOUR DEFINITE PURPOSE

Look at your list.  What do you notice.  Do you notice that some of your goals are related?  Do you noticed that many of your goals will automatically be handled, when other goals are achieved.

Let’s say, you have poor health.  There is no amount of money or time that is going to help you achieve your goals without better health… right?  SO… your definite purpose is going to be one of your physical health goals…

Let’s say, you are in perfect health and it is simple a matter of needing more money and more time, then you may need to think outside the box… because many times… more money does not translate into more time… at least initially.

I like to look at it this way.

Time goes fast.

Time with family and friends slips by…

What if… you had started 5 years ago and were successful today?

Can you look at it that way… can you say… In 5 years… I want to be in that place?

This first step… is the first step in a long line of steps… but it’s a step!  You have definitely moved forward.

Once you have a Definite Purpose or Goal… you can start to shape your world around your achieving that goal.  Every action… every moment is nothing more than another step towards your ultimate goal!

Think about it.

How much easier if you have a definite amount of money that you are working towards… or a definite school certification… or weight… or stamina challenge…

Remove the “some day I’ll” from your conversations… and turn it into “I plan on …”

Get it?
